Home Reset

While I would love to tell you my house is kept daily, that would just be a lie. It’s spring-cleaning time and I am loving every second of purging and organizing. However, the organization only lasts so long, and the purging will have to happen again at some point in the year. That’s why the days that I finally get the energy and motivation to reset our home, it takes most of the morning, but it makes me feel so much better for it to be clean! Even if it’s only for a few minutes!

Here is what those reset days look like for me…

Typically, it starts with being awakened by a hungry toddler early in the morning. After having to get up and get his breakfast, I proceed to fix a large cup of coffee. Once I come to the conclusion that I won’t be able to go back to bed, I look around and decide; today is the day I get this house in order.

  1. Start in the kitchen - put stuff away that doesn’t belong on countertops, unload the dishwasher, load the dishwasher if there is a sink of dirty dishes (there always is), and wipe down the counters and the stovetop.

  2. Pick up the living room - I have my toddler get all of his toys cleaned up, make sure there is nothing in the floor, fold blankets, and remove anything that doesn’t belong in the living room.

  3. Vacuum - I run the vacuum over the kitchen, living room, and hall floor. When I have lots of energy I go ahead and vacuum the stairs while I am at it. Just not if there’s snow on the ground or it’s been raining and muddy. If my toddler’s room happens to be clean, then I go ahead and run the vacuum over his floor.

  4. Bathroom - I clean off the bathroom counter, make sure all of the towels are out of the floor, and wipe everything down.

  5. Foyer - many shoes end up on the foyer tile just inside the door. Along with anything else that comes in the front door but doesn’t make it up or down the stairs. Reset day is typically when I decide it’s time to carry said things up or down the stairs to their proper place.

  6. Laundry - fold any laundry that has not been previously folded in the days leading up to this particular reset day. Typically, that’s at least 3 loads.

  7. Bedrooms - If I feel up to it after the other jobs are done, my toddler and I will tackle his room if needed. I try to get to the master bedroom, but I typically crash on the bed and have a nap after a successful morning of cleaning. Ha!

I learned a long time ago that while I love the seasons that I can keep up the house on a daily basis, there are times when that doesn’t happen. Having days that I can reset help so much! If I am lucky enough for the house to remain clean at the end of the day, I will try to do some of the other things that need done the next day. Whether that be dusting, wiping down furniture and appliances, or mopping the tile upstairs and downstairs. Most of the time, if it does last till the next morning, I just sit and enjoy it with coffee in hand.
